What Makes Theses Designs so Recognizable?

As someone who is mainly studying in graphic design and advertainment it is important to understand what makes a logo recognizable. You probably recognized a good majority of these logos, whether it's passing by them on the road, walking around a shopping area, or just scrolling on your phone. What makes them so recognizable? What I believe can make a logo more recognizable is their simplicity and how often the masses see it. Looking at the logos, they don't have too much detail, and most use one to two colors (with exceptions of course), but with their simple deign most people could probably name some of the brands associated with the logos. Another thing I feel is important is exposure. While driving down the road you probably spotted the Shell station logo long before you pass the station. You probably see the Nike, Apple, and Starbucks store while walking around a shopping center. With how common most these businesses are present in our lives, we don't necessarily need to see the brand name to know what the logo is associated with.

Researching on this topic I stumbled on an article by ceohangout.com ( https://ceohangout.com/makes-logo-memorable/ ) that breaks down the reasons in small sections. In their article they break it down to simplicity, uniqueness, relevance, and appealing/catchy. People tend to recognize pictures easier than the name, so making a logo that can stick in someone's mind is important. Using one of their examples, the iconic Nike swoosh was created back in 1971. Due to it's simplicity and being unchanged to this day, it remains relevant and recognizable. Uniqueness was one of their topic I didn't touch one. The logo serves as the face of a company, so while it has to be simple, it has to stand out from other logos.

Of course not every logo in the world will be recognizable to everyone. So I am curious if there is any logos you think are the most recognizable. Are there any you know that others might not? Do you have other opinions on what makes a logo recognizable to you?

  1. Logos are the easiest way to signal to passersby what their store is and what they sale. What truly makes many logos stand out is exposure and memorability. One way to make a brand more recognizable is not only colors, but to also make their shape so recognizable that you can distinguish it even if it was completely blacked out. One of those is the McDonald's golden arches that can be recognized what color they may be.

  2. Logos are a perfect way to reach an audience. We see before we read. When I say a name of a franchise I see its logo in my mind. Simple and unique is always better. Color coordination or contrast is also extremely important. Logos are recognizable from the experience you tie to them. The adidas pyramid is nostalgic for me, I see it and I think soccer, or playing in the backyard. However, it also works backwards, I play soccer and in the back of my mind I think of adidas. A good logo can connect with a customer and a large scale.

  3. I've really never thought of this. Very interesting information! A company's logo is obviously the most important part of there branding. Our brains are so funny, how we are quicker to recognize a photo then we are a word. Companies make this easier on us due to the fact that they keep their logos simple. They probably do this intending for you to memorize it.

    1. I also find it interesting the different styles of simplicity a company will do to make their logo stand out. Like two logos can have the same level of simplicity but there's a certain style that sets them apart.

  5. I agree that the logo's simplicity and the regularness in which we see it - even subconsciously- play a role in what helps us remember. A logo can also become recognizable due to the connotation and publicity it receives. Human psychology plays a role in marketing, and logos are a shortened version of that to me. Even with certain companies not being as popular as they once were, they have become almost iconic - MTv, for example.
